Roulette History

As with several other ventures that you embark upon, it’s a good idea to know at least a little bit of the history behind whichever casino games that you are playing. This knowledge helps you to understand how long the games have been played, where they came from, and it also will give you a sense that you will be able to play the game for some time to come. With that in mind, casino games world would like to provide you with a brief history of the game of Roulette.

Roulette was first used to give the people of the 17th century a break from their day to day routine. Late in the 18th century, it was introduced in Europe as a casino game. It has been said that it was invented by the French mathematician Blaise Pascal, a French Monk and the Chinese. And though the actual origins are disputed, at least the different suggestions add to the intrigue of the game. Some people say that the game was invented by the Chinese and introduced to Europe by trade workers. Even the earliest casino games are said to have most if not all of the same features that today’s versions of the game have, with only one notable difference - in the older games, the single zero was red and the double was black. Since this caused confusion amongst some people, it was decided that the color of the zeros would be changed to green.

The single zero version of the game was invented late in the 19th century in France. This version of the game was very popular because of its decrease in house edge and increase of the player’s odds. The person who invented this version was invited to open a casino in Monaco (the now world famous Monte Carlo) which eventually set the standards for the game of Roulette in all of Europe.
Once there were two types of Roulette Wheels, naturally, one of the two had to become a favorite. All over Europe, the single zero wheel was winning this contest hands down because of the incredible difference in house edge. In honor of its French inventor, the single zero wheels became know as the French Wheel in Europe. It was just the opposite in America, however, the double zero wheel was and still is very popular in casinos.

Now that you have been able to learn a little about the history of this great game, we hope that you will be able to decide which version would be best suited to your needs and which one you like better in general.
